One of my fondest memories of when I was a child, was my mom reading chapter books to us at night. I remember looking forward to each night, when we would continue the story from the night before. I am not sure if I already loved reading by the time my mom starting doing this, but I am sure it helped. Jonah and I have started reading our first night book. He has his own room and has a later bedtime, so after we read a few short stories and put the girls to bed, Jonah and I head upstairs to read a chapter.
The first book we are reading is- The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White, the same author who wrote Charlotte's Web. I remember this book from my youth and Jonah is really enjoying it as well. Plus, it gives you something to look forward to at bedtime!

Now onto a couple of books I have enjoyed lately. I won't bore you with too many details here, but Peace Like a River, I really enjoyed- good fiction and The Omnivore's Dilemma- if you have any interest in the history of food and they way we eat.And- The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan

I loved the Beverly Cleary books as a kid. My sister's would call me Ramona! I'm glad Jonah is enjoying the books. Take care
fun, we do that w/ Madelyn (only it's Junie B. Jones, Anne of Green Gables, American Girl books), my mom read us Anne of GG books, Sam, Charlie, etc. I loved Beverly Cleary books also, I was really into the Babysitters Club- should I admit we started our own club?! Hey- We should have Jonah and Madelyn be pen pals! They could write each other letters and write about the books or whatever they'd like:)
Mare I want to borrow these books after Dec 18th. I am going to read only for fun, instead of for school :) I love that you read so much!!!
I love Trumpter of the Swan. My second grade teacher read it out loud to us and why I don't remember the whole story, it still stays with me all this time later. I love reading the Magic Treehouse books with Madie. Reading together is so bonding and so lasting.
I am once again happy to notice that we are so similar:) My parents (usually dad) read every night to me when I was child and as long us I can remember I have been doing the same to my own kids. Last book we read was Carlo Collodi "Pinocchio" and just now I am reading some Estonian old time christmas stories. I love it! Since we dont have much room in our home then we all will heare, it makes no differents what room you are. Bert does not care much about our reading, he just wonders around, but I do read to him during the day and older kids does that once in a while as well. We specially love Astrid Lindgren books. Have you read any of hers? Like, "Kids of Bullerby" or something like that in english...They are grate!
Mare, Trumpet of the Swan was my first "favorite book". good choice! glad to hear Jonah is loving it. i haven't read any good books lately. i inadvertently brought books with a feminist perspective, which turns me off. so, i just watch Gilmore Girls instead.
I loved Peace like River too.
